Thinking about taming Valheim animals? The Norse wilderness of Valheim can be a brutal, unforgiving place – but whether you’re playing the Viking game by yourself or on a multiplayer Valheim server, you don’t have to face it alone.
With the right care and attention, several different wild Valheim animals can potentially become loyal companions, or, uh, sources of meat. Just so you know, when you pet a tame boar in Valheim, you see the message ‘boar loves you’. But, hey, you’re hungry, and this is a survival game (you monster).
Regardless of your intentions for these creatures, it’s important to note that the more stars an animal has, the more powerful they are, and the more resources they drop when killed. There’s a drastic difference between each star – one-star Valheim wolves, for example, are much more robust and powerful than their regular counterparts. When breeding Valheim animals, you should aim to pair the highest level creatures together, as they will inherit their star rating from one of their parents. Read on to discover what animals you can tame in Valheim, and how to breed them.
Valheim Boar taming
Taming a boar is relatively straightforward, as long as you have food and materials to make a pen. Once you’ve constructed a pen for your hoggy hombres – roundpole fences (or a pit) will do the trick – you need to lure your chosen pet inside with food, or simply bait them into chasing you and then trap them. Taming them can take a while; drop food on the ground (berries, mushrooms, or carrots work), and then back away afterwards, or sneak out of their sight, so they calm down enough to schnaffle up the food. The boar will gradually become tamer each time they eat.
Breeding Boars
To breed your new tame boars simply continue feeding them. When two boars are happy (fed) they will eventually get together and produce a litle piggie offspring. They are a little shy and won’t do this if there are 4 or more other adult boars within 5 metres of them. For this reason it is less likely for breeding to happen when a pen has more than 6 boars (depending on the size of the pen, obviously). You should aim to cull to a single breeding pair when you get 6 boars, and have multiple pens – with more than 5 metres distance between them.
Remember that you can use berries, mushrooms, carrots, or turnips to feed and breed boars. You can farm carrots and turnips, so once you reach that level you can have a sustainable source of raw meat and leather scraps.
Valheim Wolf Taming
Wolves can be found in the Mountain biome, and can be much more difficult to tame than boars. They are more dangerous beasts on their own, and the mountains are generally more dangerous as well. You will need to be well prepared to go anywhere near, never mind taming one or two of them. On the other hand, wolves are far more useful than boars, as they become your loyal companion and will help defend you when under attack. A pack of wolves can be a very useful resource when adventuring in the more dangerous biomes of Valheim.

The basic principle is the same as boars – pen the wolves in, feed them what they like, and wait for them to acclimatise to being tame. The pen will need to be stronger (stakewalls), and the food they like is raw meat. You should be able to build a pen when you first sight the wolves (preferably before they attack!) then throw the meat into the pen or lay a trail of it to tempt them in. Once in complete the pen or close the door and keep an eye on your soon-to-be new best friends. They will do a lot of damage to the walls, so keep an eye out and keep repairing where necessary. You also need to be vigilant of the cold and other beasts coming across you.
