You’ve reached the Bronze Age, forging copper and tin to make meagre quantities of bronze, then contemplating the long trek around the nearest Black Forest to find another few ores. But what happens if you get ambushed by half a dozen graydwarves and a shaman on the way back? You’re going to want to know which is the best weapon for the job with your new technology!

You have a few options now, the upgraded bronze axe would be an obvious choice, the bronze spear is an great long-reaching weapon, the bronze sword would be familiar to anybody, and then the blunt bronze mace or the two-handed bronze atgeir come into the mix.

The most powerful weapon is the atgeir, with each level giving 10 more damage than the equivalent other bronze weapon. This is a two-handed weapon, however, so you won’t be able to use a shield in your other hand. That doesn’t mean you can’t block attacks, though, as you can parry and do three times your usual damage, rather than two times with the other weapons.

If you want the security of a shield, then the bronze spear, sword or mace are all good options. They have different strengths and are better in different situations. The sword will do more damage by slashing living enemies and animals. The mace is a blunt weapon and has a critical effect against skeletons in particular. The spear has a longer reach, but you can’t parry with it.

The axe deals the least damage of them all, but it does have dual-functionality. That may be a bonus if you are short of space or carrying capacity, but generally you will want to specialise and use that for chopping trees only.

Your experience with the weapons may influence your choice at the start. Most players will be using the flint axe up to this point for both chopping trees and killing enemies, so their skills with that weapon will be superior. The mace is the same skillset as the club, and the bronze spear is just an upgraded flint spear, so you may have some expertise in these already. The atgeir and sword are new classes of weapon, so you will be starting from scratch with these.

So in summary there are a number of benefits for each of the bronze weapons. Your playstyle and expected enemy will play a part in deciding. If you want to use a shield then the sword is the better weapon in more scenarios, but if you are likely to encounter skeletons then the mace is probably the best choice. If you don’t need the shield then go for the atgeir instead.
