That friendly Great White does have an appetite. Every few minutes he will attack the edges of your raft, destroying a single piece plus everything on that piece each time. You can fend him off with a spear or other weapon, although that might be difficult right at the start. Later on you will be able to armour your raft, but until then, just accept that the pieces at the edge are sacrificial to Bruce.
