You will certainly need to collect any metal ore that you find, even if you don’t have a use for it yet. You use a smelter to convert the ore into usable metal ingots, and from there you can create weapons, tools, bolts & hinges, foundation armour, and more advanced mechanisms. Bolts in particular are a key ingredient of many other advanced tools.
It is a good idea to scour the seabed around islands to hunt down any ores. They tend to be found on the steeper vertical faces slightly further out from the island. They appear in threes usually, so make sure you have a good look around any individual ones you find.
You obtain the ores using your plastic or scrap hook. The nature of where you are looking means that Bruce the Great White is always going to be a hazard. You would be best advised to remove this danger before searching for metals.
