Signs are a decorative item, but can be very useful to remind you what is in those chests, which way to go for the docks, or what plans you and your multiplayer buddies have. They can add a lot of depth to the game, even though they don’t serve any kind of survival purpose.
To build a sign you need to use the hammer and the furniture menu. You will need to have 2 pieces of wood, 1 piece of coal, and a nearby workbench. The coal is quite easily made by burning food on the campfire! I’m sure a lot of you will have a couple of pieces of coal at least by now. Later on you will be making a lot of coal in the charcoal kiln when you start smelting copper and tin.
You will need to make sure the sign is correctly oriented, with the three dots showing at the front. If you get it the wrong way around then you won’t be able to read the text on it!
Once you’ve placed the sign you can interact with it using E. Write what you want it to say (max 50 characters, but that will make the writing very small) and exit the menu. Voila!
